Fee for Service

A small service fee is charged for the pick up collection of your eligible containers. Under the current scheme, you are paid 10c per eligible, recycled container. A service fee of 3c per container is charged for the home or business pick up service. This means you will be paid 7c per eligible container.
You can still qualify for the full 10c if you take them into your nearest Refund Point yourself.

Donations

Option to Donate Your Collection to a Charity or Not-for-Profit

Whilst it's not compulsory to donate your container refund, have you ever thought about donating every so often? There are many Not-for-Profit and Charitable Organisations that are registered to receive refunds through the containers for change program. Recycle for Refunds has made it easy for Charities and NFPs to register and have customers donate their container refunds via the app. It's also a breeze to donate your container refunds if you feel inclined to do so, simply by selecting the Charity or NFP when booking a container home pick up in the app.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a minimum container collection amount?
Yes, please aim to have a minimum of 200+ containers for pick up. The more eligible containers, the better.
How do I know what day the pick-up will take place?
You will select the date within the R4R app that suits you, once you have collected and put aside your eligible containers.
What should I put my recyclable containers in?
We’ve found most people are happy with putting them in the extra large black or clear bin bags.
What are the most common eligible, recyclable containers?
Plastic water bottles, kids juice boxes, glass beer bottles and cans. Other eligible containers are one use milk containers, juice bottles, powerade bottles and anything with the 10c refund label on them. Wine bottles are currently NOT eligible.
I'm a commercial business such as a Cafe, Restaurant or Office, can I take part in this?
Absolutely. Most depots will provide your business the required number of 240L bins free of charge (small holding deposit required by most depots refunded on return of the bins).
When can I expect the refund payment for my eligible containers?
Once your containers are picked up and taken back to the depot, they are sorted and counted and numbers are uploaded into the Containers For Change POS software. Your payment is then made to you shortly after. Generally allow 5 – 7 days from time of pick-up.
How do I nominate a bank account for my container refunds?
You will set up a Scheme Member ID through the Containers for Change platform. Once you have registered, there is a place for you to nominate your bank account details. Please select this as your preferred method of payment.
Should I label my bins and bags?
Please label your bins and bags with your surname and scheme member ID number. Most people just put some electrical tape or masking tape on the bag and write the details on the tape in permanent marker.
Can home pick-ups also have a bin?
Some depots do offer bins to house holders. Generally if you estimate to have more than 250 containers per pick up and are a frequent user of recyclable containers this may be more preferred.
Where should I leave my container bags on pick up day.
By the front door, garage door or near your bin area are the best places to leave them. Once you do decide on a place, leave them in the same place for future pick ups and collections.
What bags do I use for my eligible containers?
You can use any bag you wish however what we have found is most people use the large sized garbage bags to put their eligible cans and plastic containers in. These type of bags tie up very easy and are easily transportable. If you are collecting glass bottles, it is suggested to double the bag for extra strength as glass bottles will add more weight to the bags.
Can you crush your cans for a refund?
Yes, crushed cans are accepted and this will help you fit more containers into your bag or bin (if provided). If you are using a garbage bag you may want to double the bag as crushed cans with split edges may perforate the garbage bag.
Are wine bottles eligible for a 10c refund?
Under the current Containers for Change scheme wine bottles are NOT eligible for a 10c refund. This may change in the future. Please do not include them in your collection pick up however you are still encouraged to recycle them in your council provided bin.
Can I donate my refund to a charity or good cause?
Yes you absolutely can. Refer to our Charities and Not for profit page to find out how you can donate your refund to a worthy cause.
